Over two hundred years ago several great men who had helped colonize America made a very important and crucial decision. They began the process of declaring independence from the dominant power of the time and that was England. They did not take their decision lightly, they had grievances that the King of England was failing to address and felt they had no choice but to revolt.
I was reading an article on the war on drugs that started with the Nixon administration and it discussed how the U.S. is losing the war on drugs and well frankly, is this surprising to anyone? The problem is that the war on drugs does not address the problem, it merely addresses the symptoms. To put it in simple terms drugs are like a cold and the war on drugs is like cold medicine. It only takes care of the symptoms and well right now the cold is winning. So the question is why is…
Ever told a blonde joke? How about a racist joke? How about ever used a racial epithet in anger? Ever made a stereotype or generalization about a particular group of people based upon what you “know”? Many people only consider the overt forms of racism as racism; they think the hate groups are the only ones who are racist or bad. But what about those people that aren’t overtly racist but instead are covert about their racism? These are just a few ideas of how people can be racist without even knowing it.
I know I have been ranting and raving lately about the injustices students endure, not all is doom and gloom though and I certainly don’t want this blog to become all about the negative. These last few days have been especially trying and I felt the need to “vent” about my life and the trials I am facing. I recently ran across a blog that has captured my attention. It is a blog about a woman who found out that after many years of marriage her husband had been running a Ponzi scheme and that their entire life had been…
Apparently California State University – San Marcos is no longer in the business of graduating students at least not unless you are willing to play by their obscenely inane rules. They once again, due to “budget” cuts are restricting the level of units that a student can take to only 13! The absolute absurdity of this is that they are continuing to build a student union to the tune of about 40+ million dollars. So let’s see they aren’t willing to give up their student union for a while until the budget “rights” itself. Yet they are willing to charge…
I like blogging, I like to blog because I feel like I have a lot to contribute to the world. I like having a voice. My voice may be small and very few may listen but someone, somewhere may listen and that is good enough. I think it is by small means that great changes can be made. I think that if just one person is able to feel better or do better in their life because of my blog then I have done what I have set out to do. I feel like I have a voice of reason.…
The upcoming Arizona Immigration Law is severely flawed. It criminalizes to an extreme level those who have entered the country without wading through the mound of paper work and dealing with the obscenely long waiting period. What it doesn’t do is address the fundamental causes of undocumented workers. Currently the immigration system is set up to only “allow” a select few of individuals that are lucky enough to win the immigration lottery. Why is the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness criminal? It is the basis for which this country was founded; we of all people should be embracing individuals from…
It seems that we all want life to be fair. There is and always has been a great inequality in life. Often times it comes in the form of “have’s” and “have not’s”. We tend to see things in absolutes. A person is either all good or all bad. We fail to recognize that we ourselves are not all good or all bad. When we do something that is wrong we want the most lenient of treatment. When someone else does something that is wrong, we want to “throw the book at them” so to speak. This extremist view point…
I have the joy, nay the privilege of taking the LSAT in June. I have 88 days to prepare for the first standardized test I have taken in 16 years. I thought I would do it by taking LSAT’s incessantly over the next few months. I took an LSAT on Saturday and I realized that this was a less than amiable strategy. You see I am a fairly logical person and the LSAT is all about the logic, but it isn’t common logic. It is the LSAC‘s version…
This afternoon I received an email from the President of CSUSM, the school I am attending. It was informing the student body that there was found in one of the bathrooms on campus, racial epithets. There have been a string of these lately, UCSD and their racial problems included. I am wondering where this is all coming from. My parents are from areas where racism was certainly more prevalent, but I wasn’t raised that way. It is very disappointing to hear that people still think with such hate for their brothers and sisters.
So many of you who follow my blog, know that I was recently called as Cub Scout Master for my ward and have been working at my calling for a few weeks now. I have to say I love my calling. It is fun and exciting and it seems that there is never a dull moment. This past Friday we had our Blue and Gold Banquet which for those of you who aren’t involved in Cub Scouts is the annual banquet that celebrates the birthday of the Boy Scouts. The Boy Scouts were founded in 1910 and the Cub Scouts…
This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Los Angeles Law School Forum put on by the Law School Admissions Council and hosted at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Culver City. It was a great experience and I highly recommend it. My wife and I started our trip leaving San Diego and heading up to the hotel. Now even though the forum didn’t start until Saturday, I really wanted to arrive on Friday so we could spend the night and be relaxed (as opposed to arriving the day of and being a bit stressed). We had the…
