The last couple of days I have been working on a couple of things one of which is a plan for next semester the other is deciding on which Medical Schools I want to apply to. Although I did fairly well last semester I need to do better next semester. So I am trying to plan for areas I know I need improvement in and areas I might need improvement as well. The first is easiest to work on because I know where I need to improve, the second will prove to be a little more difficult as anticipating something means figuring out variables that I may not be privy to at this time and planning accordingly. I have come up with “Rules for Success in School” for the things I know I need to improve on and I need to figure out potential variables that I need to plan for as well. I have listed below my “Rules for Success in School”
- Use Sunday for Rest, Relaxation and Church (Not homework).
- Read class material before class (as many times as possible and necessary minimum 3 times).
- Memorize class material after class (preparing for tests).
- Complete homework with precision (remember someone’s life may depend on it someday).
- Perform labs efficiently and accurately.
- Get daily exercise to keep up mentally. (20 minutes minimum).
- Pray regularly for guidance in learning.
- Read Scriptures every day. (30 minutes)
- Do something for someone else every day.
- Keep track of grades to measure progress and success.
- Organize notes and homework to keep track of classes.
- Consume adequate food (proper nutrition) to maintain mental clarity.
- Attend an institute class.
I may have to amend these at a later date but as of today they appear to be complete. Next I have started looking at Medical Schools that I want to apply to, now this is really the hard part. First of all I don’t know what my GPA is going to be and that can cause some “anxiety” and I don’t know what my MCAT score will be either. Now I have taken the practice MCAT and scored a 35 on it. But it wasn’t under test circumstances so I can’t really use that as a good gauge as to my real MCAT score. I know that I need to start preparing for that now and taking practice ones under test circumstances so that by the time I actually take it I will be able to do as well as possible. I know I have a few years to work on it but I also know that when school is in session I will have very little time available to me to start studying for the MCAT. The only thing that makes me feel better about that is that most of my classes are things that will help me study as well. So it isn’t as though I will be doing nothing but I won’t be quite as focused as my actual MCAT preparation until the summer when I won’t have as many classes and the breaks when I won’t have any classes at all. Well this break is certainly giving me much needed rest and for that I am thankful as I know that soon (in a couple of weeks) I will be busy with school again.
