“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness…That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.” –Declaration of Independence.
Lately, it has become quite apparent that we are still fighting the same fight that our forefathers had to fight. Although the “Declaration of Independence” was signed over 230 years ago we still struggle with the same oppressive entities that our country struggled with then. The battle has shifted from a war of flesh to one of spiritual correctness; the battles that are fought now are no longer fought with weapons but with words and “filthy lucre”. In the Bible it speaks of this battle “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rules of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12)
I am baffled by the nature of our society and the willingness for us to accept the things that we should oppose. The irony is we don’t accept the things we should and we accept the things we shouldn’t. I will not list the those things as I am fairly certain that anyone reading this has a conscience and knows what is right and what is wrong. But at the same time we allow in our homes and in our hearts the very evils that threaten to destroy us whenever we accept from the media or others that certain behaviors or ideals are acceptable when they simply shouldn’t be. I’ll give you one example, when we hear about a “celebrity” doing something immoral or wrong do we continue to listen? Do we allow the people we love to listen? Why is it that we don’t turn the TV off, or turn the radio down? Yet when we find out that someone we know has been doing the exact same things, there is almost an immediate judgment passed. Is that same opinion of celebrities present or do they seem “above the law”?
Now some of you may be reading this and asking what does this have to do with independence, and my response to you is this. That our battles our no longer fought on a battle field (at least not as a society) but in our minds and in our hearts. These silent wars that we fight everyday can and must be won. It is imperative that our children’s heritage be preserved. It is critical that we pass on to our children the same values and beliefs that our parents passed on to us. When I think about the forefathers of this nation I can’t help but think about how difficult a cause they were fighting for. I believe our cause because it deals with the hearts and minds of generations to come is too worthy of a fight. Perhaps even a greater cause for battle than our ancestors had. It is time that we “declare our independence” once more. Not as previously done but as society dictates that we must now do. We must come together and build one another and lift one another from the evils that are so prevalent today. There is too much at stake for this battle to be lost. The casualties are even more costly than our lives. It is the very survival of our moral life that is our cause. “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him all things, which is the head even Christ.” (Ephesians 4:14-15)
I implore you to live a legacy that can be passed on from generation to generation, one that cannot be tarnished with age. That when your history has been written and your life retold you will be proud of what you have accomplished regardless whether it be monumentally great or seemingly insignificant. I promise you that your children and your children’s children will not believe that anything you do is insignificant as long as it is done in honor. It is in these quiet and still moments of principled living that we declare our own personal independence.
