Obedience

The college I attend has a stop sign in what would appear the middle of nowhere. It is interesting to watch people and how they regard this seemingly pointless stop sign. Quite a few people blow through the stop sign as if because it is inconvenient it doesn’t matter and they don’t stop. What most people don’t take the time to notice is that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint Institute of Religion is adjacent to the school and that the stop sign is there to protect the students that come from off campus. It is disturbing to watch people disregard this sign as I know that someday someone isn’t going to be paying attention and they are going to hit a student or students that are coming out of the Institute. I titled this obedience because I realized that most of these people are decent people and that they obey most of the laws most of the time. I would safely say that most if not all of the people that blow through that sign haven’t murdered or maimed another individual intentionally. I would also estimate that if they knew that someone was there they wouldn’t blow through the sign. But for one reason or another, a lot of people aren’t obedient to the law regardless of whether or not someone is watching. I maintain that obedience when someone isn’t watching is the greatest indication of a person’s level of obedience. I know that being obedient isn’t popular. That doesn’t mean that obedience isn’t right. Our society has a definite tendency to glorify the disobedient and the “rebel without a cause” perspective when it comes to our media but when it comes to our actual lives we abhor disobedience. This inconsistency in what we teach can certainly lead to people not knowing what is right and what is wrong. I propose that as a people we need to start teaching what is right and not be so concerned with what is popular. I also propose that we need to practice obedience to even the laws that we think are irrelevant, but most importantly we need to be obedient even when no one is around to make us be obedient. I wondering what the world would be like if we all practice absolute obedience.
