Technology, is it a hindrance or helpful?

As I walk around the college I attend I am constantly watching people. It is interesting and fun for me to observe students. It isn’t in some sort of stalker sort of way, just people watching is all. I notice that most of the people are unconnected with their surroundings. You could walk along side them for quite a while and they would barely notice you, most if not all of the students walk around with iPod ear buds in their ears completely oblivious to life. I can’t help but wonder what they would do if they didn’t have an iPod to listen to, what would keep them occupied then? The other trend I notice is that those that aren’t listening to an iPod are on their cell phones, either texting or talking and in some instances both. I question if we haven’t become too dependent on technology for our social interaction and lives. If tomorrow everything was gone, could we maintain healthy and happy relationships with our friends and families? I guess the more important question that needs to be asked is, “are we maintaining healthy and happy relationships with friends and families now?” I’m not sure that we are. I think that technology is thwarting our efforts to be fully involved in our lives. I see so many people that they miss out on the here and the now because they are too busy being somewhere else. In classes I watch people text message almost constantly. Even when the professor asks them to put the phones away, they hide it for a few minutes and then return to texting almost immediately. It isn’t possible to pay attention to both the professor and a text message especially when the text messages come so frequently. They miss out so much on life and what they are suppose to be paying attention to, for instance several of my friends will be talking to me and then all of a sudden when they get a text message they rip open their phone and respond right away. Then they tune back into what I or someone else was saying until the next time a message comes. They don’t even realize how incredibly rude it is to do this, it is so common place that it is almost pointless to bring it up because they don’t see that it is wrong. I wish they would be in the conversation instead of waiting for the next message. So my question is this, “Technology, hindrance or helpful?
