I’m not a big fan of Halloween; I know that it doesn’t have to be bad however I find that often times Halloween is more about the bad than it is about the good. I think the world is bad enough and there shouldn’t be a celebration for it. My wife on the other hand loves the holidays and that includes Halloween. She dressed up and went out with her sister; I stayed home and worked on my homework. I have to say I would rather stay at home any day of the week and especially on Halloween. Don’t get…
No I am not talking about the store, although that would certainly be easier to hit. We now have a new professor for our Computer Science Lab. She is now trying to teach the way she thinks is best. I can’t blame her however it is certainly making life even more difficult than it was already. Her expectations are shall we say interesting. It has been like this all semester. It seems that no matter what we try the target keeps moving. I am grateful that the gospel isn’t like academia or the work force. The target never moves, it…
I am still torn on what to do, there is a huge part of me that doesn’t want to quit, most of all because there isn’t anything else I want to do, at least not nearly as much. I really like computers and I like working on them. I like being able to create with them and most importantly I like knowing how they work. Despite what I said yesterday, I am excited about taking physics and more math. I do really enjoy it. I like knowing how things work and how I can make things work better. I just need…
I am trying to decide on a different major. I thought I could pass calculus but much to my regret I cannot. I have attempted it several times and have met with the same result each time. I can’t go onto the other parts of computer science without passing calculus. There are several benefits to changing majors of which the most important is I can graduate earlier than I could with computer science. Now the real question is what major should I choose? I am thinking about Political Science and then heading on to law school. If I do that…
Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us…
In the New Testament we learn about Mary and Martha, “Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? Bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and…
Although this blog is mostly about religion and how it influences our lives I also wanted to take this time to talk about Alzheimer’s disease. Today my wife and I had the opportunity to walk in a 5K to help fight Alzheimer’s. My grandfather passed away from Alzheimer’s about two years ago. It robbed him of his mind and towards the end he didn’t even remember his own children. I am well aware of what it can do as I use to work in a hospital and I had to help several Alzheimer’s patients as well as their family. It…
The story of Abinadi is one of my favorite accounts in The Book of Mormon. Abinadi was a prophet of God called to preach the gospel to King Noah and his people. King Noah was a very wicked king who had set up his own religion that would allow him to do as he pleased. They would flatter him and tell what he was doing was right even when it was wrong. Abinadi had the courage to stand up to the King and tell him and his people what they were doing was wrong. He even went to the grave…
In The Book of Mormon one of the men known as Alma the younger, was characterized as “the very vilest of sinners.” (Mosiah 28:4). “He became a very wicked and an idolatrous man. And he was a man of many words, and did speak much flattery to the people; therefore he led many of the people to do after the manner of his iniquities. And he became a great hinderment to the prosperity of the church of God; stealing away the hearts of the people; causing much dissension among the people; giving a chance for the enemy of God…
Nephi teaches us, “Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy” (2 Nephi 2:25) I have always loved this scriptures because it reminds me that in these troubled times that there is more to life than simply existing. We are here so that we might have joy. I strongly believe that joy is greater than happiness. Happiness is what you feel in the moment; it is somewhat temporary and fleeting. Joy on the other hand is long lasting. Joy allows us to weather the storms of life and push through them to a…
I had an interesting thing happen to me today, and it has happened to me a couple of times before. I had a disagreement with one of my teachers. You see he interpreted the homework assignment one way and I interpreted it another. It wasn’t explicitly stated and he didn’t clarify. Now mind you he hasn’t once clarified anything that could be ambiguous in the homework. The question is if there isn’t a clear cut answer to something that is vague how can you be wrong? I mean besides the whole he is the teacher and I am the student…
Table of contents for First Principles and Ordinances
The first ordinance of the gospel is baptism by immersion for the remission of sins. There is quite a bit of speculation about the logistics and necessity of baptism. We learn from Peter, who said, “…Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” (Acts 2:38) So we see that baptism is required for the remission…
One of my favorite parts of The Book of Mormon is when Captain Moroni raises the Title of Liberty, “And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it—In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children—and he fastened it upon the end of a pole. And he fastened on his head-plate, and his breastplate, and his shields, and girded on his armor about his loins; and he took the pole, which had on the end thereof his rent coat, (and he…
I was reading a blog that discussed the “differences” between mainstream Christianity and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The controversy lies in the fact that most of Christianity, denies that prophets can exist. They believe that The Bible is the absolute and final word of God. It is the cannon and is closed. Yet, it is apparent that although they read The Bible they do not believe everything in the bible. For instance in Amos it clearly states, “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” (Amos…
