Act of Random Kindness

Today I was blessed to experience the kindness of a stranger. It wasn’t something huge at least in the grand scheme of things but I feel that it certainly deserves acknowledgement and praise. I was doing laundry this evening and a wonderful woman helped me out, here is the story: I started the laundry and left it to wash, I returned home to find one of my roommates was home so we had a nice little chat. I went into my room to work on my blog, the alarm for the laundry went off and I left with two dollars in quarters to put my laundry into the dryer. I walked back into the laundry room and started to put my clothes into the dryer. All of the dryers on the bottom were taken so I put all my clothes in to two different dryers that were on top. I put my quarters in the first dryer and pressed start, it started right up. I did the same with the second dryer and pushed start and nothing happened. I tried fiddling with the latch at the top to see if it help and nothing happened. A Hispanic lady that had her clothes in the dryer below the one that didn’t work came over and pulled her clothes out early so I could put my clothes in her dryer. She then promptly put her clothes in another dryer she was using. Because the two dryers were tied to each other the quarters that I had put in worked on the bottom as well.

This wonderful woman didn’t have to help me, but she did. It was great to see someone else take the needs of another ahead of her own. She could have very easily not done a darn thing and I wouldn’t have thought any less of her for it. But she saw a way she could help and she did. I’m not saying this woman was a saint but I am saying that if more people were like this woman the world would be a better place. I hope that during this time of year that we might all take a moment and perform acts of random kindness. Doing something for someone else even when you don’t have to, this is a gift that the world needs.

Do any of you have any experiences where a stranger has done something for you when they didn’t have to? Do you have any experiences where you gave acts of random kindness? I would love to hear more stories of how others have affected your lives. Please feel free to either email them to me so I can share them with others or post them as comments if you feel so inclined.
