A little Christmas Miracle

I wanted to share a little Christmas miracle that happened to me and my wife. It was the usual sort of day before Christmas. We still had no idea what to get my brother in-law or my father in-law. I had some ideas but for the most part they are incredibly hard to shop for, not because I didn’t want to get them gifts but because my father in-law has everything he wants and my brother in-law isn’t very obvious in what he wants. I knew that my father in-law would be the hardest and that is why I left him to the end. My brother in-law I figured would like a movie but even at the very last minute I couldn’t figure out my father in-law. I went to several stores and finally found at Barnes & Noble a book that I knew he would like. He recently got a new Blackberry from his work. He was still learning how to use all of its functions. So I thought he would like a book that will help him learn more about it. I wanted to get him the book Blackberry Curve for Dummies. That isn’t to say he is a dummy so much as that is the title of the book and it puts what to do in plain English without a lot of techno speak. It was the perfect gift. We just couldn’t afford it. It was $25 that we did not have no would we have any time soon. If I could have figured out something else that he would actually like and we could afford I would have done it. I was sitting at Wal-Mart because I thought they might have the book cheaper. They didn’t.

As I was sitting at the blood pressure machine next to the pharmacy trying to figure out what to do, an elderly woman struck up a conversation about Christmas with me. She was a delightful woman who was trying to help me figure out the gifts for my family. After a while we considered that my brother in-law would definitely get a DVD and my father in-law should get the book. Still I didn’t have the money and I didn’t know how to get it. This wonderful woman started to take the money out of her purse. I tried refusing it but she wouldn’t hear of it. She gave me the money, a hug, a kiss on the cheek and made me promise the money would go to the gift for my father in-law. I thanked her profusely and as quickly as she had entered my life she left. I sat their stunned not because I wasn’t feeling anything but because I was feeling so much. I was so grateful that this dear sweet woman took the time out of her holiday to spend just a moment with me. It was even more meaningful that she would help me give the gift that I so desperately wanted to give my father in-law.

I took the money to Barnes & Noble to get the book, while I was there I noticed that there was a woman there wrapping presents. She was doing it for donations to the Susan G. Komen foundation that is fighting breast cancer. I thought it would be a great way to show my appreciation to the woman that had given me so much. So I donated a portion of the money to this foundation. It was amazing to see the difference that one person could make in the lives of others. I hope that I can continue to try to make that same difference in others’ lives as I work to give back to those in need.
