This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Los Angeles Law School Forum put on by the Law School Admissions Council and hosted at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Culver City. It was a great experience and I highly recommend it. My wife and I started our trip leaving San Diego and heading up to the hotel. Now even though the forum didn’t start until Saturday, I really wanted to arrive on Friday so we could spend the night and be relaxed (as opposed to arriving the day of and being a bit stressed). We had the opportunity to stay at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza for both Friday and Saturday nights. We arrived shortly after 3:00 and checked into our room. It was a little bit of a shock as we had to pay quite a bit of money just for valet. We weren’t expecting that so we had to adjust what we did accordingly. The hotel was beautiful and quite nice, the bed was one of the better beds I have slept in when it comes to a hotel, the pillows were absolutely amazing, and they had a very nice flat screen television. It was my first time staying at that nice of a hotel. My main complaint was that even with as expensive of a place it was, they charged for EVERYTHING! No free Wi-Fi ($9.95 a day), no free Continental Breakfast ($21.00 a person), they practically charged for the soap that was in the room. Don’t get me wrong, it was a great place. But I wouldn’t stay there again unless I had a VERY good reason. I’m not cheap mind you but when a hotel costs that much they could at least give you something free. That evening we enjoyed a quite night in our hotel room (mind you we had to go out for food because the cheapest individual meal was $15.00).
The following day we woke up early and got dressed for the day. I had the whole day scheduled so I could attend as many classes as possible. The only class I wasn’t able to attend was the Diversity Panel because I really wanted to meet with the school’s representatives, so I spent that time that I would have spent in the class to get to know some of the law schools. Let me first and foremost tell you that law schools are a lot more down to earth than a lot of people might think. I talked with several admissions individuals and they were very much on the level with me. I detected no guile in my conversations. They gave me information freely and openly and I am here to tell you that a lot of the misnomers that currently exist amongst Pre-Law students are just that misnomers. Very little or no validity can be found in most of the rumors that exist surrounding law school. I learned a lot and I know that I want to attend law school. Previously I wasn’t as optimistic about my chance of getting in to law school, however now that I have actually spoken with some representatives I feel quite optimistic about applying and my potential for acceptance. Is it going to be easy? Probably not. Is it possible? Absolutely.
I would also like to tell you about how incredible Stanford really is; the representative was down to earth and answered all my questions. Even though there were people in line she didn’t seemed rushed. She didn’t try to hurry me along and I even went back to ask her an additional question and she was again quite accommodating. Even if I get denied, I decided that I at least wanted a shot at Stanford. They are now my first choice, my wife and I visited the campus this past year and I absolutely love the setting. It was a nice clean campus and even though there was some construction it didn’t seem obtrusive and annoying (granted I am not currently attending but it didn’t look too bad to me).
So it begins my application and hopefully my transition from my undergraduate work to law school. I will be blogging about not only what I am learning in my current studies but I will also be blogging about becoming an attorney. I will of course continue to blog about life, love, and everything else but I am looking forward to sharing with you my journey.
