Fairness in Life

It seems that we all want life to be fair. There is and always has been a great inequality in life. Often times it comes in the form of “have’s” and “have not’s”. We tend to see things in absolutes. A person is either all good or all bad. We fail to recognize that we ourselves are not all good or all bad. When we do something that is wrong we want the most lenient of treatment. When someone else does something that is wrong, we want to “throw the book at them” so to speak. This extremist view point lends to a “us” versus “them” mentality. The world is not black and white only shades of grey. Of course in a perfect world there would be a clear line and everything would be well defined. We do not live in such a world.

On that note fairness or justice is different for different people. What is fair for one individual may not be fair for another. A person with a true mental illness is not the same as a well meaning parent that commits the same crime. They cannot be judged by the exact same standard there would be no justice for either individual. I am in no way saying that leniency should be given but rather the punishment should be relative to the context of the crime.

Despite these great inequalities in life we can seek to make a difference. Those who are in positions of power can be advocates for those who are unable to be advocates for themselves. Life doesn’t have to be a zero sum game. Just because an individual “wins” doesn’t mean that another individual HAS to “lose”. Again, life is not black and white so why do we have to seek for others to lose for us to win. There is a way that everyone can win (some more that others due to the inherent differences) and that is through charity.

Charity in the traditional sense is often thought of as a hand out. I do not believe that handouts are the answer to inequality. I believe that work through honest means is the answer. I am referring to a different charity or rather charity as the love of all people. When we have charity we will be less concerned with what we don’t have and more concerned with what we do. Charity permeates every aspect of our life. We become more concerned with how our actions can help others as oppose to how our actions can help ourselves. Giving without regard for ourselves becomes the focus of our lives instead taking all that we can get.   It is only through the unconditional love of all men and women that we can obtain justice in life.
