Apparently California State University – San Marcos is no longer in the business of graduating students at least not unless you are willing to play by their obscenely inane rules. They once again, due to “budget” cuts are restricting the level of units that a student can take to only 13! The absolute absurdity of this is that they are continuing to build a student union to the tune of about 40+ million dollars. So let’s see they aren’t willing to give up their student union for a while until the budget “rights” itself. Yet they are willing to charge us more money and allow us to take fewer classes. I appealed to get the unit restriction lifted and they denied me. Saying they only allow exceptions for military and for students graduating this fall. The worst part about it is that if I don’t get into the classes that I need I won’t get to graduate. What they fail to see is the domino effect. I can’t afford to wait the additional time. I am applying to law school this fall, if I don’t complete these classes I will have to wait an entire year to get into law school.
Not to mention I can’t afford financially to go an extra semester for two classes! Two classes that will cost me hundreds of dollars all because the university wants to charge me more by limiting the amount of units! What they don’t know is that their plan actually worked! They educated me to the point that I can see beyond their lies and see things for what they really are and that is out to exploit teenagers and their parents for more money. If I had the power and money I would sue the university. This is a public university not a private one, their responsibility is to the citizens of this country and state to do the right things. Instead they have gone the way of the rest of the world and are only looking out for themselves and their salaries. They could care less about educating; they are only interested in a paycheck.
They are bilking the state and federal government for more money as they force students to extend their time at the university beyond what a normal four year degree would require. Not only are they limiting the unit amount to 13 but they also require students to take upper division general education credits. It increases the time required at the university by ¾ of a semester. Which means that typically people end up spending more than just the extra semester because classes are limited and once they are full you have to wait an additional semester to get the classes that they require you take to graduate, this all in the name of higher education, exactly what is the point of upper division general education? I thought once you finished your lower division general education you would be done with “general education”. But alas these extra classes are required so that you have to stay longer and they can get more money.
This university preaches social justice and change and yet they themselves are unwilling to do the type of change that they teach. They are only willing do what is convenient for the bottom line and this then gets passed on to the students. During this past semester the teachers were required to take a 10% pay cut and take furlough days. Well, we as students were dramatically affected, they not only increased tuition but even when the teachers were on their “furlough” days we still had to class work that was required to be completed. So once again we are paying more and getting less. Our tuition increased substantially, you would think this would make up the difference and the teachers wouldn’t have to take a pay cut and furlough days. We are getting ripped off and no one is doing a thing about it!
Can you tell I am angry? Can you tell I am fed up? I have played by their rules; I haven’t said anything until now. I thought that if I stayed within the boundaries that are set by the school that I could graduate and then help make the changes that need to be made. Instead I am being screwed over by the system that I supported.
Please don’t misunderstand me I am grateful for the higher education; however the bureaucracy is leaving something to be desired. Administrators are only concerned with their plans and their paychecks; they fail to understand that without the students they would have no jobs much less any plans and or futures. It is evidenced in everything they do. I am tired of students being told they have no power or unable to make the changes. I implore anyone who reads this to take a stand against these bourgeois bureaucrats. Someday when I complete my degrees I will return and use the very “education” that they have tried so hard to keep me from having and make sure that others are never affected like this again. If they want to talk about social injustice all they have to do is look at their own campus and administration because they are epitome of social injustice despite their preaching to the contrary.
