The Unexpected Life

I know I have been ranting and raving lately about the injustices students endure, not all is doom and gloom though and I certainly don’t want this blog to become all about the negative. These last few days have been especially trying and I felt the need to “vent” about my life and the trials I am facing. I recently ran across a blog that has captured my attention. It is a blog about a woman who found out that after many years of marriage her husband had been running a Ponzi scheme and that their entire life had been built on lies. She details her account of what it was like to wake up one day and her entire life was gone, she was innocent of any wrong doing however that didn’t stop people from judging her as though she had been a part of the scam. I will let you read her blog yourself but I wanted to talk about the point of her blog: The Unexpected Life.

The Unexpected Life is the life that you didn’t plan, the one that happens when you aren’t looking and when you least expect it. I know my life has turned out nothing like I was anticipating. When I was younger I had an idealistic perception of what life would turn out to be, that didn’t happen and well frankly I am okay with it. To me it has turned out better. I have plenty of trials that I never thought I would have but I know that they have made me a better more empathetic person. I judge less and love more. I am more patient because I have, “been there done that” so to speak. I have endured many things although nothing insurmountable. That isn’t to say that I don’t have a long ways to go but I am getting there (where that is I have no idea but I’m trying none-the-less). The more I live, the more I realize that you just have to keep going day after day and not get bogged down by the minutia of everyday life.

The unexpected life is meant to be different, it is meant to be better, only if you let it. Many people get caught up in the “what if’s” and the “maybes” in life and dwell constantly on what could have been. This energy spent on the dreams of life takes away from what is and distracts you from changing what you can. The life that you had planned then becomes even more different because you lost the focus on the goal. You missed out on life itself because you were worrying too much about the past. I know that this is easier said than done but stop focusing on the past and start worrying about the present. The future will take care of itself if you keep your eye on the prize. In the immortal words of Rafiki in The Lion King, “it’s in the past, it doesn’t matter.”

Please don’t misunderstand me I am not saying your past isn’t important, I am saying don’t dwell on the past so much that it continually and repetitiously defines who you are and what you can do. Your past can help propel you to greater heights than you ever thought possible if you keep it in the proper perspective. It can become the springboard to your success. The most important lesson you can learn is that your past doesn’t have to be your future.
