Morality and the Law

Very rarely do both morals and laws coincide with one another. What is morally right often times cannot be legislated. Case in point racism, despite our current laws their still exists a very racist society. It is also true that laws are very rare a proper indication of morals. An example of this is slavery and “separate but equal”. There was even a law in one state that allowed for the murder of a religious sect simply because you wanted their land. Currently there are a couple of battles being fought legally that have great moral implications.

A Declaration of Independence

Over two hundred years ago several great men who had helped colonize America made a very important and crucial decision. They began the process of declaring independence from the dominant power of the time and that was England. They did not take their decision lightly, they had grievances that the King of England was failing to address and felt they had no choice but to revolt.

Violence for Social Change

Violence as a means for social change is difficult to comprehend. The very essence of social change is to make society different even better at points; regardless of the causes, violence seems to only make it worse. Whether it is life, liberty or property someone always loses something when violence is employed. If all other non-violent options are exhausted and violence is the only means to bring about the needed changes then the violence is immeasurable in value. The Boston Tea Party was one such…

It’s not the racism you see, it’s the racism that you don’t

Ever told a blonde joke? How about a racist joke? How about ever used a racial epithet in anger? Ever made a stereotype or generalization about a particular group of people based upon what you “know”? Many people only consider the overt forms of racism as racism; they think the hate groups are the only ones who are racist or bad. But what about those people that aren’t overtly racist but instead are covert about their racism? These are just a few ideas of how people can be racist without even knowing it.

Arizona Immigration Law

The upcoming Arizona Immigration Law is severely flawed. It criminalizes to an extreme level those who have entered the country without wading through the mound of paper work and dealing with the obscenely long waiting period. What it doesn’t do is address the fundamental causes of undocumented workers. Currently the immigration system is set up to only “allow” a select few of individuals that are lucky enough to win the immigration lottery. Why is the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness criminal? It is the basis for which this country was founded; we of all people should be embracing individuals from…

Seriously, racial epithets at CSUSM in the bathroom?

This afternoon I received an email from the President of CSUSM, the school I am attending. It was informing the student body that there was found in one of the bathrooms on campus, racial epithets. There have been a string of these lately, UCSD and their racial problems included. I am wondering where this is all coming from. My parents are from areas where racism was certainly more prevalent, but I wasn’t raised that way. It is very disappointing to hear that people still think with such hate for their brothers and sisters.

The Few. The Proud. The Marines.

I am sure that most American’s have at least one time in this life heard these words uttered by a commercial or other advertisement for the United States Marine Corps. I find these words to bring comfort to me as I enjoy the freedoms that they work so hard to protect. These brave men and women sacrifice willingly of their time and means to bring the United States of America some of the choicest blessings of ANY nation on the earth. I can think of no other nation that has a military that is composed of men and women so…

Raising your voice to be heard

In light of all that is going on in the world, I think this subject is one that is appropriate. Often times so many people sit idly by and watch as the decisions of others affect their lives and not necessarily for the good. Then when they don’t like what has happened they sit back and complain about it. It is only when it affects them directly do they start getting involved. Certainly the time to get involved is before you are affected. There is so much room for change but if we let the world go on without saying…

Sorrow

My heart goes out to those people who due to the actions of another are experiencing the loss of a loved one. In the news lately there have been a string of heinous crimes. The shooting at Fort Hood, the office rampage in Florida, the boy who was set on fire for $40, the girl who was gang raped in front of the Richmond High School, and so many more than I can’t list them all. I think these events hint at a greater underlying problem and that is that we as a nation are suffering. There is so much…

It’s too late to be too deep

I am sitting here trying to do my blog for the day and well it is nearly midnight and I have barely started. I am tired and need to go to bed but I made a commitment to myself that I would write a blog every day. So today’s blog will be short, sweet and to the point. First of all, I would like to really ask, what is going on with the Nobel Peace Prize committee? I mean seriously, what has President Obama done to deserve this prestigious award? I’m not saying that he doesn’t deserve it but the…

Failure

As positive as I like to be about life, the inevitable does happen. Despite my best efforts things can fall apart. I found myself in one such situation today. I have worked really hard to be ready for my calculus class. Today was our first test. I am fairly certain I failed the test. I couldn’t even answer some of the questions. I looked on blankly and could not for the life of me figure out what I needed to do to solve the equations as they were presented to me. Now, I could go on and on about how…

Beginnings

I hope by starting this blog that great things can happen. Not necessarily to me per se but to people and the world. I hope that I can bring a different and new perspective to current events, perhaps even events in your lives. I hope that my journey in life can help others to overcome the adversity in their lives. Perhaps most importantly I hope to bring a voice of reason to what appears to be an unscrupulous world that celebrates evil and promotes bad. This brings me to my point of this blog post, apparently filmmaker Roman Polanski believes…

Current Musings

Sarah Palin resigned recently, at least that is what the news media is all hyped up about, but seriously, does it matter? I mean in the big scheme of things does it matter. I mean so far we have had “the normal” candidates that do everything by the supposed book and look how they turned out. I suppose it is human nature that we want things to remain somewhat close to the status quo, whenever things get off track we balk at them and question them. I am not saying I necessarily endorse Mrs. Palin however I am saying that…

Independence Day

Today we celebrate our independence, two hundred and thirty three years ago, 56 brave men signed the declaration of independence. It was a monumental occasion; a few men that represented the people of the thirteen colonies were attempting to become a sovereign nation. However, today I would like to talk about other forms of independence. In today’s society, too many people are dependent on external things; this could be anything from people to drugs. The things people are dependent on are astounding. I guess to one degree or another we are all dependent. If we feel as though we are…

Amazing!

This woman appeared on “Britain You’ve Got Talent” and did an amazing job. Prior to her audition she was laughed at and scorned because of her appearance. No one was laughing afterwards. It is amazing how incredible she was. I hope she is able to go all the way and become whatever she is supposed to come.
