Jesus Christ, not the Savior of the World?

According to Islam, Jesus Christ was merely a prophet. He did miracles and prophesied but the basis upon which Christianity is founded they dispute. What it really boils down to is, did Jesus Christ atone for the sins of the world and was he crucified and resurrected? Islam would have you believe that it didn’t happen and that the Koran was sent to Mohammed by the angel Gabriel to correct Christianity. So the question I have is this, which one is correct? Who is right? I mean after all you have two different sacred texts in direct contradiction with each…

The Spirit of Love

In one of my previous posts “They Can’t Handle the Truth” I blogged about individuals that feel the need to attack our faith, these individuals feel it is incumbent upon them to correct us of our errors. After reading a few more blogs I realized that I didn’t do some of them justice. Unfortunately the situation goes both ways, we as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sometimes come off as judgmental. When someone leaves the church although we may disagree with them for leaving, we should NEVER treat them with the same contempt and…

The Gift of the Holy Ghost

Table of contents for First Principles and Ordinances

  1. Faith
  2. Repentance
  3. Baptism
  4. The Gift of the Holy Ghost

As the final topic in The First Principles and Ordinances of the Gospel, The Gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands. This perhaps is one of the more delicate topics and should be referred to with the utmost of reverence. The Gift of the Holy means the potential for constant companionship from one of the Godhead. It is only given to those that have fulfilled all of the other principles and ordinances. Through this we can be sanctified by ”bapti[sm] …with the Holy Ghost,

Sorrow

My heart goes out to those people who due to the actions of another are experiencing the loss of a loved one. In the news lately there have been a string of heinous crimes. The shooting at Fort Hood, the office rampage in Florida, the boy who was set on fire for $40, the girl who was gang raped in front of the Richmond High School, and so many more than I can’t list them all. I think these events hint at a greater underlying problem and that is that we as a nation are suffering. There is so much…

If thou art…

In 1839 Joseph Smith was incarcerated in Liberty Jail based on false allegations. During his time in jail he petitioned the judge for release but his pleas were met with no relief. He also petitioned the Lord for help, “O God, where art thou? And where is the pavilion that covereth thy hiding place? How long shall thy hand be stayed, and thine eye, yea thy pure eye, behold from the eternal heavens the wrongs of thy people and of thy servants, and thine ear be penetrated with their cries? Yea, O Lord, how long shall they suffer these wrongs

Martha and Mary

In the New Testament we learn about Mary and Martha, “Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? Bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and…

The very vilest of sinners

In The Book of Mormon one of the men known as Alma the younger, was characterized as “the very vilest of sinners.” (Mosiah 28:4). “He became a very wicked and an idolatrous man. And he was a man of many words, and did speak much flattery to the people; therefore he led many of the people to do after the manner of his iniquities. And he became a great hinderment to the prosperity of the church of God; stealing away the hearts of the people; causing much dissension among the people; giving a chance for the enemy of God

That they might have joy

Nephi teaches us, “Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy” (2 Nephi 2:25) I have always loved this scriptures because it reminds me that in these troubled times that there is more to life than simply existing. We are here so that we might have joy. I strongly believe that joy is greater than happiness. Happiness is what you feel in the moment; it is somewhat temporary and fleeting. Joy on the other hand is long lasting. Joy allows us to weather the storms of life and push through them to a…

Interpretation

I had an interesting thing happen to me today, and it has happened to me a couple of times before. I had a disagreement with one of my teachers. You see he interpreted the homework assignment one way and I interpreted it another. It wasn’t explicitly stated and he didn’t clarify. Now mind you he hasn’t once clarified anything that could be ambiguous in the homework. The question is if there isn’t a clear cut answer to something that is vague how can you be wrong? I mean besides the whole he is the teacher and I am the student…

Baptism

Table of contents for First Principles and Ordinances

  1. Faith
  2. Repentance
  3. Baptism
  4. The Gift of the Holy Ghost

The first ordinance of the gospel is baptism by immersion for the remission of sins. There is quite a bit of speculation about the logistics and necessity of baptism. We learn from Peter, who said, “…Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” (Acts 2:38)  So we see that baptism is required for the remission…

Prophets

I was reading a blog that discussed the “differences” between mainstream Christianity and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The controversy lies in the fact that most of Christianity, denies that prophets can exist. They believe that The Bible is the absolute and final word of God. It is the cannon and is closed. Yet, it is apparent that although they read The Bible they do not believe everything in the bible. For instance in Amos it clearly states, “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” (Amos

Atonement

The greatest expression of love that has ever been shown to us was the atonement, the very moment when man through Jesus Christ was reconciled to God the Father. I do not pretend to know all there is to know about the atonement. I do know something about it. I know that God’s laws are unbreakable, meaning they are infinite and eternal. They do not bend with the trends of popular opinion and they certainly don’t bend or are breakable with time. They are not an outdated collection of “suggestions”. They are given to men and women for their happiness (more on…

Peace

While on my mission, we use to give spiritual messages to members that would invite us over for dinner. One of my favorite messages to give was one where I begin by juggling. The children loved the juggling but I also would teach a gospel principle. Eventually I would drop the balls and along with it I would share this scripture: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27) Life is a lot like…

Just because…

Just because you don’t believe in Him doesn’t mean that He doesn’t believe in you. To those of you who are lost and cannot find your way, I am here to tell you that He is here with open arms to love you and believe in you. Just because you have a bad day doesn’t mean you can’t have a good night. Just because you don’t feel loved doesn’t mean you aren’t. Just because someone says nice things doesn’t mean that they are a nice person, they could be lying to you. Just because someone says mean things doesn’t mean…

Foster Parrent

Today’s blog is dedicated to the memory of a man I have only known briefly, his name is Foster Parrent. He was my wife’s sister’s grandfather-in-law. He was a dear man who is survived by his sweet wife Wanda. I met him approximately 2 years ago and have had several occasions to interact with him. I didn’t know him well but I knew him well enough. I am saddened for his wife and her loss. They have been married for 60 years! He was 84 years old and was fighting cancer; he died September 30, 2009 and was buried today.…
